What is actually going on
Inside every nail there is a vein. On a light nail you can see it. On a dark nail you cannot, which is why almost every bad experience happens with dark nails.
So you cut a little less to be safe. And a little less. And eventually you stop.
The part that changes everything
The vein retreats when the nail gets shorter. That means long nails are not a problem you fix in one session. It is a problem you fix a millimeter at a time, over weeks, and the vein moves back as you go.
Nobody tells you this, so people try to fix it all at once, hit the vein, and confirm to themselves that they cannot do it.
What you can do this week
- Do one nail. Then stop. Not one paw. One nail. Then give him something good and walk away. You are rebuilding trust, not doing a job.
- Grind, do not clip. Grinding removes less per pass, which means you cannot make a big mistake in one movement.
- Use light. Held against a bright light, most dark nails stop being opaque and you can see where the vein ends.
Do this today: hold one of his paws for five seconds and let go before he pulls away. Do not cut anything. That is the whole exercise, and it is the one that makes the rest possible.
