He is scared of the clippers

That usually goes back to one bad session, and neither of you forgot it. A grinder is a different sound and a different feeling, so he is not being asked to sit through the same thing again.

Let him hear it running across the room before it ever touches a nail. Then near him. Then one nail. Some dogs get there in a day and some take a week, and both are fine.

How do I know when to stop?

This is the part everybody worries about, and it is the reason to take a little off at a time instead of all at once.

Grind for a second or two, then look at the flat face you just made. Stop for the day as soon as a small dark circle shows up in the middle of it. The circle is the signal, and going slowly is what gives you time to see it.

His nails are black and I cannot see anything

Then you go by the flat face instead of by the nail. Take one short pass, turn the paw so the light hits the end you just flattened, and look for that small dark circle in the middle. On dark nails it reads as a change of texture before it reads as a colour.

Shorter passes, more of them. That is the whole trick.

How loud is it?

Quiet enough that most dogs will tolerate it in the same room where they sleep. It is a low hum rather than a click, and there is no moment where something suddenly gives way.

Let him hear it running before it touches him. The sound is usually the part he has to get used to, not the nail.

He will not hold still for all of them

He does not have to. One nail is a finished session if that is all he gives you today, and the rest keep until tomorrow.

Most people do it on the floor, next to a dog who is already lying down, and stop the moment he pulls the paw back.

Long nails are the part almost nobody connects. When they get long enough, they lift the pads off the floor, and a dog walking on nails instead of pads slides on every surface in the house.

Most people stop trimming because they cut too far once and it bled, and neither of you forgot it. A grinder takes off a little at a time, so one movement cannot become a mistake.

What changes for him. Nail day stops being the thing he braces for. One nail, then a break, then another tomorrow, instead of one long hold where neither of you is sure.

It is quiet enough that the sound is not the thing he reacts to, it charges over USB, and it has two speeds. Do one nail a day if that is what he tolerates.

A dog rests on the kitchen floor next to his owner before she starts on his nails

At home, on the floor

You can hear him coming down the hall

Tick, tick, tick, all the way to the kitchen. His nails have been on the list for weeks. The clippers are in a drawer, and every time you pick them up you remember how the last one went and you put them back.

Most people stop for the same reason. It is not for lack of trying.

A grinder makes the decision smaller. You are not taking a piece off. You are taking a little off, then a little more, and you can stop the moment he has had enough.

  • The quiet nail grinder held in one hand, sitting on the kitchen floor

    1. You sit down where he already is

It runs on a charge and fits in one hand, so there is no cord and no table to put him on. The kitchen floor is the whole setup.

  • A hand holding a dog paw and taking a little off one nail with the quiet grinder

    2. A little off one nail, then a look

Hold the nail steady and touch the tip for a second or two. Two speeds, so you can start on the low one and stay there for as long as he prefers it.

  • A dog sleeps on the kitchen floor with his paw on his owner's leg and the grinder switched off beside them

    3. You stop before he asks you to

One paw today, another on Thursday. Nothing about this has to happen in one sitting, and the day it ends with him asleep on the floor is the day it stopped being a fight.

How far is far enough

You can see where to stop

Inside the nail there is a pink core, and it ends well before the tip. Everything past it is the part that comes off.

Taking a little at a time is what makes that readable. One short pass, then look at the flat end you just made. When a small dark circle appears in the middle of it, you are done with that nail for the day.

A dog stopped at the edge of a hard floor, hesitating before crossing it

Why the nails matter

It starts at the floor

Once the nails get long they touch down before the pads do, and they lift the pads just enough that he is walking on nail instead of pad. On tile and on wood that is the difference between grip and no grip.

So he starts choosing where he walks. He stops at the edge of the kitchen. He takes the long way round, on the rugs. Short nails put the pads back on the floor, which is where they do the work.

  • Nails come back in three or four weeks

That is true for every dog and it does not stop, which is the honest argument for owning one. A minute every couple of weeks is a much smaller thing to ask of him than a long session twice a year.

  • Thirty days, and nothing to send back

Thirty days from the day it arrives, not from the day you order. Write to hello@alongpaws.com, tell us what happened, and we refund you. No forms and no photos.

  • A real person reads every email

You can write before you order. Tell us how he is about having his paws held, and we will tell you honestly whether we think this will be easier for him.

Before you buy

The things worth knowing first

A woman sits on her kitchen floor beside her dog after finishing his nails

He hated the clippers. Why would this be any different?

Two things are different. The sound is a low hum instead of a click, and nothing happens all at once, so there is no single moment for him to brace for.

That does not make it automatic. Let him hear it running across the room, then near him, then let him smell it, and only then touch a nail. Plenty of dogs need a week of that before the first nail.

Do I have to do every nail at once?

No, and it tends to go better if you do not. One paw today and another on Thursday is a perfectly normal way to use it. He decides when the session is over.

How does it charge?

Over USB, so a phone charger, a laptop or a power bank all work. There are no batteries to keep buying, and there are two speeds, so nothing needs setting up before you start.

What does shipping cost?

Nothing. Free shipping to any address in the United States, on every order, with no minimum. We do not ship outside the US yet.

What if it does not work out?

Thirty days from the day it arrives, not from the day you order. Write to hello@alongpaws.com, tell us what happened, and we refund you. No forms, no photos, and you do not need to send it back.

Can I ask something before I buy?

Yes. Write to hello@alongpaws.com and a real person reads it. Tell us how he is about having his paws held and we will tell you honestly what we think.
